Free Dictionary API (dictionaryapi.dev)

• What it is / what it is used for: The Dictionary tool lets a visitor double-click a word to view its definition in a popup. Definitions are fetched from the open-source Free Dictionary API.
• What data is sent and when: A request is sent only when the Dictionary tool is active and a visitor double-clicks a single Latin-character word (max 64 chars). The word is sent in the URL (https://api.dictionaryapi.dev/api/v2/entries/en/{word}). No personal information, cookies or site URLs are transmitted.

Wiktionary REST API (en.wiktionary.org)

• What it is / what it is used for: A fallback for the Dictionary tool. The Free Dictionary API above is a small community project and does go offline, which left the tool unable to show any definition at all. When it does not answer, the same word is looked up on Wiktionary, run by the Wikimedia Foundation.
• What data is sent and when: Only if the first service fails to answer. The same single word is sent in the URL (https://en.wiktionary.org/api/rest_v1/page/definition/{word}). No personal information, cookies or site URLs are transmitted. A working first service means this one is never contacted.
